Etymology edit

The first element from östra (“eastern”). It was added in 1885 to distinguish it from other locations with the same name.[1]

The second element inherited from Old Swedish Nybbile, derived from Old Danish *nybyli (“new construction”). The last part löv is an otherwise common toponym, but was here added in the mid-17th century as a folk etymological addition.[2][1]

Earliest known form attested since 1322 as Medieval Latin Ecclesiis Nybbile.[1]
