ærgi
Faroese edit
Etymology edit
From Old Irish áirge. Compare Scottish Gaelic àirigh (“hill pasture”).
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
ærgi n (genitive singular ærgis, plural ærgi or ærgir)
- a pasture for cattle to graze over the summer with a hut where the people tending them live meanwhile; a shieling, saeter
Usage notes edit
- Because of dialectal variation, when in compounded placenames, this word is sometimes spelled as pronounced in that area, thus the existence of both the form Argisá and Ergisá. On modern maps, these are spelled Ærgisá.
