From Ottoman Turkish چرپنتی (çırpıntı, “the rubbish cast on shore by the waves”),[1] from Ottoman Turkish چرپنمق (çırpınmaḳ, “to flutter and struggle with the wings or arms, to make a fuss”), from Ottoman Turkish چرپمق (çırpmaḳ, “to beat slightly, to tap, to clip, (of the heart) to beat violently”),[2] morphologically çırp- + -ın + -tı.
