Inherited from Middle French escrier, from Old French escrier (to scream, cry out), partially from es- (out) +‎ crier (to cry, shout, scream), and partially from Frankish *skrīan (to yell, scream, call out, shout), from Proto-Germanic *skrīhaną (to cry out), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kerey- (to scream, caw).
