Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اولچمك (ölçmek), from Proto-Turkic *ölč- (to measure);[1] cognate with Azerbaijani ölçmək, Bashkir үлсәү (ülsəw), Chuvash виҫ (viś), Kazakh өлшеу (ölşeu), Kyrgyz өлчөө (ölcöö) and Uzbek oʻlchamoq
