From Proto-Turkic *ẹ̄ĺ (“friend, companion, mate”). Cognate with Turkish eş, Kyrgyz эш (eş, “friend”), Southern Altai эш (eš, “friend”), Tuvan эш (eş, “friend”), Northern Altai эш (eš, “friend”).
