Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s (“moon, month”), probably from Proto-Indo-European base *meh₁- (“to measure”). Cognate with Persian ماه (mâh), Old Armenian ամիս (amis, “month”), Latin mensis (month), Old Church Slavonic месеци (meseci), Latvian mēnesis, Dutch maan, Welsh mis, Breton miz (month).
