From Proto-Hellenic *génetōr, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénh₁tōr, from *ǵenh₁- (to produce, to give birth) +‎ *-tōr (agent noun), equivalent to γίγνομαι (gígnomai, to be born) +‎ -τωρ (-tōr, masculine agent noun suffix). Compare Latin genitor.
