Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *(s)koris (“cutting, gnawing”), from *(s)ker- (“cut”). Cognate to Russian корь (korʹ, “moth”).

Alternatively related to ἀκαρί (akarí, “mite”) via Pre-Greek.
