From Ancient Greek ὀρθός (orthós) , from Proto-Hellenic *ortʰwós, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃r̥dʰwós, from *h₃erdʰ- (upright). Cognate with Latin arduus, Sanskrit ऊर्ध्व (ūrdhvá).
