From πέσσω (péssō, to cook) +‎ -τρῐᾰ (-tria). Reflects Proto-Indo-European *pékʷ-tr-ih₂ ~ *pkʷ-tr-yéh₂s (female cook), from *pekʷ- (to cook), compare Latin coctor m, Sanskrit पक्तृ m (paktṛ́).
