From Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (“flat, broad, plain”). Cognate with Latin plaga (“region, tract”), Old High German flah (“flat, smooth”), Middle Low German vlake (“hurdle, small grid”), Old Norse flaki (“plank, canopy, shed”). More at flake.
