Etymology

From πουλ(ί) (poul(í), “bird”) +‎ -ερικό (-erikó, “suffix of uncertain etymon”). Petrunias associates it to neuter noun αερικό (aerikó, “etheral spirit, demon”) a word reminding of air and flying. Babiniotis, to σιδερ-ικό (sider-ikó, “object of iron”) or πεθερ-ικό (pether-ikó, “father-mother-in-law”) (but both words with ‑ερ- in their stems, suffixed with -ικό).
