EtymologyEdit

From Byzantine Greek Σκλάβος (Sklábos), probably from earlier Σλαβῆνος (Slabênos), from plural Σλαβῆνοι (Slabênoi), from Proto-Slavic *slověne (plural; the singular form Proto-Slavic *slověninъ is derived from it). Compare the doublet Σλάβος (Slávos, Slav). Cf. also Latin sclavus.
