Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂mn̥ (that which stands, stature). Cognate with Latin stāmen and Ancient Greek στάμνος (stámnos, jar). By surface analysis, ἵστημι (hístēmi) +‎ -μων (-mōn).
