According to Frisk, from φρίσσω (phríssō, to be rough or bristly on the surface). However, Furnée compares βρίκελοι (bríkeloi, beams of a standing loom), suggesting a Pre-Greek origin. Probably related also to φόρκες (phórkes, pales).
