Etymology edit

From вода́ (vodá) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ -росл (-rosl) +‎ (), based on a difficult-to-explain combination with расти́ (rastí, to grow) (compare the past feminine singular росла́ (roslá)). A parallel construction occurs in ле́торосль (létoroslʹ, sprout), also found as ле́торость (létorostʹ), with cognates Old Church Slavonic лѣторасль (lětoraslĭ), Czech letorost, Polish latorośl.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): [ˈvod(ə)rəs⁽ʲ⁾lʲ]
  • IPA(key): [ˈvodərəsʲɪlʲ] (phonetic respelling: во́доросель)
  • (file)
