Eveloped via syncope of -н- from an earlier trisyllabic form вуаллнешш (vuallnješš), from Proto-Samic *oalulëš, from earlier *oalulë-, from Proto-Samic *oalōl, from Proto-Uralic *ola.

Cognates include Skolt Sami vuålˈlõš and Akkala Sami vallaš.
