Etymology edit

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *zarokъ. Deverbal from early Proto-Slavic *zarekti (later *zareťi), with Indo-European ablaut typical of nouns. Compare заре́чь (zaréčʹ, to prohibit, to force to renounce), заре́чься (zaréčʹsja, to renounce, to forswear).
