Inherited from Old East Slavic зиꙗти (zijati), from Proto-Slavic *zijàti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źiā́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰh₂i-éh₂-yeti, from *ǵʰeh₂-. Cognate with Russian зия́ть (zijátʹ).
