From Proto-Turkic *em-ček (breast; nipple) (earliest attested in 13th century), from *em- (to suck).

Cognate with Kyrgyz эмчек (emcek), Southern Altai эмчек (emček), Kazakh емшек (emşek), Crimean Tatar emçek, Uzbek emchak, Salar emçüx, Turkmen emjek, etc.
