Etymology edit

From Middle Mongol ᠮᠡᠷᠭᠡᠨ (mergen, wise, skilled at archery), from Proto-Mongolic *mergen (smart, wise; good marksman), compare Mongolian мэргэн (mergen, sharpshoter).

Cognate with Kazakh, Kyrgyz мерген (mergen, shooter), Uzbek mergan (shooter, hunter), etc.
