Serbo-Croatian edit

Alternative forms edit

Etymology edit

From Proto-Slavic *ne + *este, second-person plural present tense form of *byti. This formation later created *ne jesmъ in the South Slavic vernaculars, which merged to become něste (attested in the 14th century). Because of the yat reflex, něste became rendered as нијесте in Ijekavian speeches.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /nijěːste/, /nijěste/
  • Hyphenation: ни‧је‧сте

Verb edit

није́сте, нијѐсте (Latin spelling nijéste, nijèste)

  1. (historical, literary) negative second-person plural present of бити
