From Classical Mongolian ᠨᠥᠬᠦᠷ (nökür), from Middle Mongol [script needed] (nökür /⁠nökör⁠/), from Proto-Mongolic *nökür.

Cognate with Buryat нүхэр (nüxer), Kalmyk нөкр (nökr, a friend, obsolete), Dongxiang nokie, etc. Compare also Southern Altai нӧкӧр (nökör, a friend), Karachay-Balkar нёгер (nöger, a partner), Yakut доҕор (doğor, a friend), etc.
