Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *osьla[1] or *osla̋,[2] from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ-l-. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic осла (osla), Slovak osla, Slovene ósla, Polish osełka. More distant cognates include Armenian ասեղ (aseġ, needle) and dialectal German Achel (awn).
