Etymology edit

Inherited from Old East Slavic пелынь (pelynĭ), from Proto-Slavic *pelynь f, *pelynъ m. Compare Bulgarian пели́н (pelín), Czech peluň, Polish piołun. Per Vasmer, a connection with пали́ть (palítʹ, to burn, scorch) and поле́но (poléno, (burning)log) is possible.
