промы́шленный (promýšlennyj) +‎ -ость (-ostʹ)

Attested since the 18th century, calque of either French industrie or Latin industria; compare in this regard Polish przemysł.

Some linguists assert that it was coined by Nikolai Karamzin, but others dispute this.
