Etymology edit
Uncertain. Only found in some Balkan languages. Compare Bulgarian стопанин (stopanin) and also the related Romanian stăpân, Megleno-Romanian stăpǫn. Possibly linked to an early form of Albanian shtëpi (“house”) or its derivative. See also Greek σπίτι (spíti).
