Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish تنكه (teneke) (Turkish teneke), from Persian تنگه (tange), from Persian تنک (tonok, تنک, literally thin), from Middle Persian tnwk (tanuk, thin, shallow), from Proto-Indo-European *ténh₂us (thin). Compare Macedonian тенок (tenok, thin) and Macedonian танок (tanok, thin).
