Inherited from Common Turkic *oglï. By surface analysis, уол (uol, “boy; son”) + -а (-a, vowel harmonic third-person singular possessed suffix).
Cognate with Tuvan оглу (oglu), Kazakh ұлы (ūly), Turkish oğlu, etc.
