Etymology edit

From Proto-Turkic *ogrï (thief).

As indicated by the retention of -ğ-, this term, via literary tradition, derives from a Karluk and/or Oghuz source — compare Uzbek o'g'ri, Uyghur ئوغرى (oghri), Turkish uğru (thief).

Compare the native Kypchak development: Kazakh ұры (ūry), Kyrgyz ууру (uuru), Kumyk уру (uru, thief).
