Inherited from Old East Slavic *щу́ка (*ščúka), from Proto-Slavic *ščùka. Cognate with Russian щу́ка (ščúka), Old Novgorodian щю́ка (ščjúka), dialectal Old Polish szczuka. First attested in the 16th century.
