Bashkir edit

Эскәмйә (1)

Etymology edit

From Russian скамья́ (skamʹjá, bench), with prosthetic vowel to dilute the initial consonant cluster, which is prohibited by Bashkir phonotactics (however this rule does not affect recent loanwords, such as Гренландия (Grenlandiya)).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): [ɪ̞s.kæm.ˈjæ]
  • Hyphenation: эс‧кәм‧йә

Noun edit

эскәмйә (eskəmyə)

  1. bench
  2. (sports) bench; the place where players (substitutes) and coaches sit when not playing.
