From Proto-Slavic *ǫgъlъ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂engulos (“joint?”). Cognates include Sanskrit अङ्गुरि (aṅgúri, “finger, toe”), Old Irish ekkja, Old High German enchil (“ankle, joint”) and Latin angulus (“corner, angle”).
