Etymology edit

From *qoñ(ğu)rağu (bell) (compare Karakhanid [script needed] (qoñrağu, bell), the action noun from the verb *qoñ(ğu)ra- "to ring a bell", from Proto-Turkic *koñra- (to ring, toll).

Cognate with Kazakh қоңырау (qoñyrau, bell), Kyrgyz коңгуроо (koŋguroo, bell), Uzbek qo'ng'iroq (bell; telephone call), Uyghur قوڭغۇراق (qongghuraq, bell; ring), Khakas хонъро (xonʺro, cowbell), Southern Altai коҥыра (koŋïra, iron ring with pieces of tin, used as part of a shaman's ritual costume), etc.
