From Proto-Turkic *ürk- (to be afraid).[1]

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (ürk-, to startle (of sheep));[2] Kyrgyz үркүү (ürküü, to be frightened of), Southern Altai ӱркӱӱр (ürküür), Uzbek hurkmoq, Uyghur ئۈركىمەك (ürkimek), Turkish ürkmek.
