Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s (moon; month).[1][2][3] The initial ա- (a-) is an original Armenian development due to association with ամ (am, year). The deviant genitive-dative-locative ամսեան (amsean) has been explained as an adjective formation in Proto-Indo-European *-ih₃no- with the basic meaning “monthly”.
