From Proto-Indo-European *seh₂d-, grown from *seh₂-, +‎ -ոք (-okʻ). The closest cognates are Ancient Greek ἅδην (hádēn, to one's fill, to satiety) and ἁδρός (hadrós, thick, strong, full-grown, ripe).
