Etymology edit

The origin is unknown. The word is found in neighboring languages, Georgian ქადა (kada), Turkish kete, Azerbaijani kətə, Northern Kurdish kade, Udi ката (kata). According to Ačaṙyan these are borrowed from Armenian. Justi derived all from French gâteau but this is not accepted by Ačaṙyan and J̌ahukyan considers the similarity to be accidental. Ačaṙyan remarks that the Turkic forms correspond to dialectal (Hamshen, Karabakh) քաթա (kʻatʻa).
