Old ArmenianEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Indo-European *wei(H)nyo-, *woi(H)nyo-. Cognates include Ancient Greek οἶνος (oînos), Albanian venë, verë, Latin vinum, Hittite [script?] (wiyan-, wine). A non-Indo-European substrate origin has also been suggested: compare Hebrew יין (yāyin) and Arabic وين (wain). Proto-Kartvelian *ɣwino- is probably borrowed from Proto-Armenian.
