From Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (“to melt”), whence also թանալ (t'anal) and թանչ (t'anč). Cognates include Ancient Greek τήκω (tēkō), Sanskrit तोयम् (toyam), Latin tabeo and Old English þawian (English thaw).
