Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *plew- +‎ -ան- (-an-).[1] Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *lewh₃-, whence լոգանամ (loganam).[2]

լուանամ (luanam)

  1. (transitive) to wash, to cleanse, to bathe; to rinse
    լուանալ զերեսluanal zeresto wash the face of; to wash one's face
    լուանամ զձեռսluanam zjeṙsI wash my hands of it, I'll have nothing to do with it
    ջուրբ լուանալǰurb luanalto inundate, to wash away, to destroy by floods
    աղիւս լուանալałiws luanalto wash a blackamoor white, to lose one's labour
  2. (transitive, figuratively) to reproach, to scold
    լուանալ զոք թշնամանօքluanal zokʿ tʿšnamanōkʿto scold, to upbraid, to reprimand, to blow up
  3. (intransitive, mediopassive) to wash, to wash oneself; to bathe, to bathe oneself
  4. (intransitive, mediopassive, figuratively) to clean oneself from, to wash out a stain of dishonour

The word has the following combining forms լուա- (lua-), լուաց- (luacʿ-), լուայ- (luay-).
