Etymology edit

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gol- and cognate with Tocharian A kälyme, Tocharian B kälymiye (direction). Alternatively, of the same origin as կողր (kołr).

In some compounds the word has the combining form կողին- (kołin-), which is the genitive of *կողն (*kołn), an alternative form of կող (koł).
