From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰim-er-n-, from *ǵʰey-. Related to ձիւն (jiwn, “snow”) and ձմեթ (jmetʻ). See also ձմերուկ (jmeruk).

The word has two combining forms: ձմեռն- (jmeṙn-) and ձմեր- (jmer-). The compounds with ձմեռ- (jmeṙ-) and ձմերն- (jmern-) are misspellings.
