Etymology edit

The earlier form is մարհ (marh), borrowed from some Iranian descendant of Proto-Indo-European *mr̥-tu-, *mr̥-ti-u- or *mr̥tro-, from *mer-. According to Bolognesi, borrowed specifically from Parthian *marh(u), from Old Iranian *mr̥θyu-; compare Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬚𐬌𐬌𐬎 (mərəθiiu, “death”).
