Ačaṙean leaves the origin open.

According to J̌ahukyan the root is *մաճ- (*mač-), probably from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂dyo-, from *meh₂d-, and related to մաճառակ (mačaṙak, fresh cheese) and մաճառ (mačaṙ, brine).
