From Old Armenian նշոյլ (nšoyl), from նի (ni-) + շող (šoł, “ray, beam”). For this prefix compare նայիմ (nayim) from հայիմ (hayim), նեցուկ (necʿuk) from յենում (yenum), նիւթ (niwtʿ) from հիւթ (hiwtʿ).
