Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *olbʰ-, grown from the onomatopoeic root *ol-, *el-, whence possibly also աղաչեմ (ałačʻem), աղաւթք (aławtʻkʻ), աղատել (aġatel), աղատ (aġat), աղմուկ (ałmuk). Cognate with Lithuanian ulbauti (to warble) and Ancient Greek ὀλοφύρομαι (olophúromai, to lament). Further cognate with Lithuanian nu-aldė́ti (to sound), Old Norse jálmr (noise), Saterland Frisian ulken (to cry, to mock), Swedish alken (to begin to growl), Ancient Greek ὀλολύζω (ololúzō, to cry out loudly, call, moan), ἔλεγος (élegos).
