Old Armenian edit

Etymology edit

Dialectal evidence points to an earlier form *պատուրհան (*paturhan), which is borrowed from a Middle Iranian word meaning "opening for ventilation", composed of the preverb *pati- and *frāna- (breath): compare Sogdian [script needed] (βrʾn /frān/), Sanskrit प्राण (prāṇa, breath).[1][2] Folk etymology explains the word as պատ (pat) + հանել (hanel), i.e. “a hole in the wall”.
