From earlier ետղ (etł), from Proto-Indo-European *sedlo-, from *sed- (to sit). Cognates include Ancient Greek (Laconia) ἑλλά (hellá, seat), Latin sella (seat, chair, saddle), Old Church Slavonic седьло (sedĭlo) (Russian седло (sedlo)), Old High German sezzal (seat) (German Sessel) and Old English setl (English settle).

The origin is uncertain.

Ačaṙyan considers a Classical Syriac borrowing, comparing Classical Syriac ܛܠܐ (ṭalāʼ, dew) and noting the alternative form տաղ- (tał-) found in the derived term տաղատարափ (tałatarapʻ).
